Once They Breach Your Mind, All Hope is Gone

One of my roommates last year was somewhat of a Broadway fan. Every now and again, I'd hear her sing a song from Rent or Oklahoma! or something. The line that I remember most was "Popular! You're going to be pop-u-U-lar!" from Wicked. I had never heard of the musical before last fall, but am becoming more and more familiar with it.

I worked for almost a year in the administration building of BYU. There I would clean offices early weekday mornings, and there I met Opera Man. His nickname was coined by one of my coworkers, due to his penchant for belting out music 24/7 and not caring who heard him. He sang the same bit a few times in my hearing, and I wondered why this was the only line from that musical that I had ever heard, but had heard several times.

Last week I was at the library, browsing the cds, and saw the soundtrack to Wicked. Remembering the great times I'd had with the one line I knew from it, I decided to check it out. I read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, then played the cd. The first song I listened to was "Popular," then started over with the first track. I paused after three or four songs, then got up to get some nutrients. As I searched the pantry for something containing chocolate, I found myself humming the infamous line. All efforts to stop thinking about the tune were to no avail; "Popular! You're going to be pop-u-U-lar!" had attacked, invading my mind and trying to force itself from my lips. I now understand my roommate and Opera Man. I was inflicted by the same disease.

If we could harness the power of this line, what horrors we could accomplish! The people we could drive insane! Or at least annoy!

I also have trouble with the beginning to "Yellow Submarine." Feel free to share any song lyrics that have a similar affect on you.

I've been finding myself humming commercial tunes lately--things like car commercials. It's quite disturbing really. Right now I'm listening to Death Cab for Cutie, so I'm not thinking of much else.
